House and pet sitting for the past 20 years has afforded me a lifestyle others only dream of. Traveling and experiencing some of the world’s richest cultures through housesitting opportunities is one of life’s greatest gifts. As a traveling housesitter and photographer, I’ve discovered that Europe’s cities offer an incredible collection of bridges—each telling a unique story of engineering, history, and human connection. It has given me a great perspective and as such I offer you a view of this housesitter’s Europe from the perspective of the fabulous bridges.

🏰 Luxembourg: Hidden Gem of Bridge Architecture

Luxembourg City surprised me during a recent housesitting assignment with over 1,200 bridges throughout the country. The city centre’s Petrusse Valley offers delightful walks where you can appreciate small valley bridges from above and larger spans from below. This makes Luxembourg a real highlight of this housesitter’s Europe.

Prague: Europe’s Most Beautiful Bridge City

In any housesitter’s Europe, Prague ranks among Europe’s most photogenic cities, with the River Vltava flowing through its heart. During my house and pet sitting stays here, I’ve discovered that views from Letna Park above the river are absolutely magnificent for bridge photography.

Charles Bridge dates to the 14th century and features 30 statues
Prague boasts over 30 bridges crossing the Vltava River
The newest addition, Nulse Bridge, was built in the 1970s

Another photographer’s paradise is Venice. Venice’s canal system creates unparalleled housesitting photography opportunities, making Venice a dream attraction for a housesitter’s Europe. The oldest bridge, Rialto, crosses the Grand Canal, while the famous Bridge of Sighs earned its melancholic name from prisoners’ sighs as they crossed from the Doge’s Palace to prison—a poignant reminder that bridges carry emotional significance.

The Ponte Vecchio stands as Florence’s most famous bridge—a medieval stone arch spanning the Arno River. As the only Florence bridge spared during World War II, it represents resilience and continuity, another place that resonates with this housesitter’s Europe.

Today’s jewellery shops, art dealers, and souvenir sellers continue the centuries-old tradition of bridge commerce.

Verona: Ancient Roman Engineering

During a European housesitting assignment, I captured the stunning Ponte Pietra, dating back to 100 BC. Partially destroyed in WWII, it was meticulously reconstructed using original stones recovered from the river. Located near Juliet’s famous wall, it connects romantic Verona’s past with its present.

💡 Pro tip: While you can leave love notes at Juliet’s wall, using chewing gum is illegal!

🚲 Amsterdam: Canal Bridge Capital

Amsterdam‘s canal system creates a housesitter’s dream for bridge photography, with over 1,200 bridges throughout the city, and of course they offer not only aesthetics but also a history of the city. It’s definitely worth a trip to the Amsterdam Museum.

Haringpakkersbrug: A functional drawbridge that opens for passing boats

Porto: Architectural Beauty Above

Porto’s most charming area lies in the port district, filled with stunning architecture, cafes, and street performers. The elevated bridge views showcase this Portuguese gem’s relationship between upper and lower city levels.

👑 London: Thames Bridges for Traveling Pet Sitters

London’s River Thames (pronounced “Tems”) offers housesitters incredible bridge diversity, in fact there are 35 bridges that cross the Thames in London!

While London Bridge inspired the famous nursery rhyme, Tower Bridge provides the real excitement—this suspension bridge near the Tower of London opens for passing vessels.

padlocks or 'love locks' as they are called on the Pont des Arts — The Love locks on the Pont des Arts typify the public romantic gestures we all love and you can’t help but notice on foot walking through your housesitter’s Europe. I think they started here in Paris

The River Seine flowing through Paris creates romantic bridge scenes enhanced by stunning architecture on both banks. As someone who frequently stops in Paris while traveling by train from London to European pet sitting assignments, I’ve grown to appreciate how the Paris bridges frame the city’s grandeur.

Pont Neuf (“New Bridge”) is actually Paris’s oldest bridge
Pont Alexandre III showcases extravagant design and beautiful sculptures
Pont des Arts became famous for romantic “Love Locks” (though these have since been removed)

🥾 Cross-Border Bridge Walking: France to Spain

One of my greatest travel housesitting thrills involves walking between countries over bridges. The journey from Hendaye, France to Irun, Spain offers this unique experience as I cross my housesitter’s Europe on foot.

Exit Hendaye train station, walk to the Basque Euskotren
Take this charming local train to San Sebastián or other Basque destinations
Alternative: Walk the bridge crossing (about one hour) over the Bidasoa River

Fascinating Fact: The Bidasoa River contains Pheasant Island, jointly governed by Spain and France with alternating six-month control periods—a treaty dating to 1659!

Madrid: Royal Palace Bridge Views

While Madrid lacks a major central river like other European capitals, the Manzanares River flows below the Royal Palace. The Puente de Toledo, completed around 1720 and designed by Pedro de Ribera, creates gorgeous photography opportunities for housesitters exploring Spain’s capital.

Camino Santiago: Pilgrimage Bridge Discoveries

The Camino de Santiago features numerous bridges, from unnamed weathered stone crossings to famous spans like:

Puente la Reina: Both bridge and town share this royal name
Puente de Orbigo: A long bridge leading to Hospital de Orbigo (meaning hospitality, not medical facility)

Having walked the Camino 15 times since 2005, and stopped for housesitting before and after, I have carved my own housesitter’s Europe. In fact, I’ve discovered that even simple stone bridges become deeply meaningful. One particular arch near Pamplona became so familiar that I recognized it in a painting hundreds of miles away—proving how travel creates lasting visual memories.
