A Guide to Growing Eucalyptus Gunnii Varieties

Eucalyptus isn’t just the favourite snack of the koala bear, it also makes for a stunning addition to a garden display. The most popular of all the Eucalyptus trees is arguably the Eucalyptus gunnii aka Cider Gum species. This is for a variety of reasons, including its hardiness, soothing colour palette and attractive shape.

This article will put the spotlight on four of the most popular Cider Gum Eucalpytus gunnii varieties, focusing on the characteristics that differentiate them. This way you’ll be able to choose the right species to add to your outdoor setup.

Eucalyptus gunnii (primary variety)

Consider the main variety of this tree. Growing Eucalyptus Gunnii gives a good insight into the overall nature of the alternative variants within the format. As stated prior, it’s known well among green-thumbed individuals for its evergreen nature and hardiness. This means it can survive temperatures down to as low as -15°C  (lower than British winters often become).

Grown competently, this eucalyptus has round, waxy and silvery-blueish-green leaves that gain elongation over time. It should also have bark that appears in shades of grey and green, which also peels throughout the year. Along with all of this, the varieties all give off a very pleasant fragrance. You can grow Eucalyptus gunnii in pots, on borders or in larger beds, with all of the different varieties (that we’re going to get into) known for being fairly low-maintenance.

Some of the care tips you should keep in mind when growing Eucalyptus Gunnii, whichever variety you choose, include:

  • Position the plants in full sun or partial shade
  • Plant the varieties in moist, well-drained soil
  • Prune the plant regularly to restrict unnecessary growth (depending on your desired shape)
  • Water regularly during the establishment of the plant but it’s not as important once the plant is healthy
  • Offer shelter from strong winds in the early stages of the plant’s development

Within gunnii plants, there are a few exciting varieties.

Eucalyptus Gunnii Azura

This differs from the traditional Eucalyptus gunnii tree by taking more of a shrub form, with less of a primary trunk and more spindly smaller stems. The silvery-blue leaves are very round and plentiful, with a uniquely pleasant fragrance. Azura are very disease-resistant, also having impressive insect-repellant qualities, making them a great choice for patios and balconies as well as more extensive garden displays.

Eucalyptus Gunnii Louis

Eucalyptus gunnii Louis begins life as a much smaller evergreen shrub, made up of multiple primary stems, all adorned with super round blueish-green leaves. It’s a unique choice as it can start its time in your home as a windowsill plant, before growing to heights and widths of around 3 metres, making it a great choice if you like to see notable development in your gardening projects.

Eucalyptus Gunnii ‘Blue Ice’

This variety gets its name from both its super silvery-blue, round leaves and the capacity for hardiness that it shares with other gunnii variants. It’s a sleeker shrub/tree, with thinner stems that almost appear to skewer the leaves that pop up on it. If you leave this plant to its own devices, it might grow to heights of around 6 metres. This means it’s more well-suited to larger borders and beds than container growing.
