Fun Visit for Housesitters in Narbonne🌞
I recently spent three days in Narbonne, travelling by train through France. I had just completed a Housesit in London and was on the way to another in Madrid. Narbonne proved a delightful visit full of surprises.
Narbonne: A Sun-Drenched Gateway to Southern France
Narbonne is a lovely town, tucked between the Mediterranean Sea and the rolling vineyards of the Corbières, it is one of France’s underrated treasures—an ancient Roman city with a relaxed spirit, generous sunshine. I found it a perfect stop over between housesits. I recommend is as a perfect short trip for housesitters in Narbonne.
The train station is an easy walk from the centre of town and is a bit of a hub, trains coming north from Barcelona, east from Toulouse, south from Lyon and going to Spain from Montpellier or Marseilles, generally all stop here.

Rare treat for this housesitter
It’s rare as a full time housesitter that I stay in hotels. This time I splurged and stayed at a charming little hotel, five minutes from the station. The building was beautiful, irresistible. I recommend Wills Hotel, housed in a beautiful, historic building, the reception people are friendly and welcoming, especially Yolanda, and the rooms clean and pretty. I was staying out of season I guess but still it was pretty popular. There was so much to see. A real find for any housesitters in Narbonne.

A Walk Through 2,000 Years of History 🎨🏰
Founded in 118 BCE as the first Roman colony in Gaul, Narbonne still carries its past with effortless grace.
Less than a 20 minute walk from the train station, the Via Domitia, is an exposed slab of ancient Roman road right in the city centre—it is a tangible reminder that all paths once led to Rome.
A short stroll from there brings you to the Narbonne Cathedral (Saint-Just-et-Saint-Pasteur), whose unfinished nave only adds to its dramatic charm. Its soaring Gothic arches and serene cloisters rival those of more famous cathedrals, yet remain blissfully crowd-free.

Nearby, the Palais des Archevêques blends medieval fortifications with Renaissance elegance. Climb 162 steps up to the top of the Donjon Gilles Aycelin tower for panoramic views of the terracotta rooftops, the Canal de la Robine, and the distant Pyrenees.
I was entranced with the Musee d’Art et d’Histoire, housed in a gorgeous building of soaring arches and columns, it shows art and costumes that really give a feel for the place and its people.
Canal Life & Sunny Mediterranean Breezes 🏖️
The Canal de la Robine, a UNESCO World Heritage site, cuts a graceful line through the heart of Narbonne. Locals gather along its banks for evening strolls, apéritifs on shaded terraces, or relaxed bike rides.
Follow the canal south and in just over ten kilometres you reach Narbonne-Plage, a sweeping sandy beach kissed by the warm Mediterranean.
Quick visit by bus to Gruissan

I took a local bus from Narbonne to the coast. Google maps can give you the bus numbers and bus stops. It goes to the beach and to the small town of Gruissan.
Set between the glistening lagoons of the Narbonnais Natural Park and the sweeping beaches of the Mediterranean, Gruissan is an easy day trip from Narbonne.
At Gruissan’s heart lies its historic circular village, known in French as a village circulaire. Clustered tightly around the medieval Tour Barberousse, the old stone tower, ruins of a former castle, the village forms a spiral of narrow streets, sunbaked façades, and hidden squares.

Climb to the top of the tower for the best panorama: terracotta rooftops below, shimmering lagoons in the distance, and the blue line of the sea beyond. The steps are a bit uneven as you get to the top, so climb with care.
The church that is just to the left of the steps leading up to the Tour, is one of the most delightful I have ever seen. And I have seen a lot of churches wandering around Europe whilst Housesitting for the last 20 years!
The walk from where the bus stops is about 20 minutes and you can stroll through a park next to a lagoon and see flamingos. I found a couple of their pinky orange feathers near to the waters edge.

Another easy day trip from Narbonne is Beziers, about 10 minutes by train.

Nearby Béziers: A Hilltop City of Wine, History, and Sunlit Canals 🦆

Rising proudly above the Orb River, Béziers is a sun-drenched city with more than 2,500 years of history. Known for its vineyards, medieval charm, and engineering marvels along the Canal du Midi, Béziers offers a blend of heritage and southern French spirit that feels both authentic and vibrant.
Béziers claims one of the oldest urban histories in France, with roots stretching back to Roman times. The city’s skyline is dominated by the Cathédrale Saint-Nazaire, perched dramatically on a rocky outcrop above the river. Its fortified silhouette and Gothic architecture are best admired from the old stone bridge, Pont Vieux, especially at sunset when the cathedral glows honey-gold.
I saw signs of the Camino here, as it is part of the route of Santiago beginning in Montpellier which I have walked myself in between housesits.
In Narbonne I was told that the Cathars had not been allowed in their town, but in Beziers there is a large history of the Cathars to be seen in paintings on the buildings I found just wandering the streets.
Why Narbonne Captivates This House Sitter
Narbonne isn’t a city rushed by tourism. In fact I bet there are very few housesitters in Narbonne, it’s not a place that is much talked about in social media. Yet, it’s delightful. A place where life unfolds at a gentle pace, where café tables spill into sunlit squares, and where every stone seems to carry a story.

Whether you’re wandering Roman ruins, tasting regional wines, cycling along the canal, or relaxing by the sea, housesitters in Narbonne will find a perfect blend of history, authenticity, and southern French charm. Based on the few parts of the town that I discovered on a short three day visit I think there is a lot for housesitters in Narbonne.
