Housesitting for Pets at Christmas & New Year – Top Tips
One of our regular housesitters Deb tells us why she loves housesitting for pets at Christmas and over the New Year period, but offers newbies some top tips to help them make the most of the house sitting experience.
Housesitting for Pets at Christmas & New Year: Festivities, Fireworks and Furry Friends!
House sitting over Christmas and New Year can be great fun, however when pets are involved, the festive season also brings extra considerations. For example, disrupted routines, winter weather, tempting Christmas treats and loud fireworks. These can all be stressful for our pets, if not managed carefully.
So, here’s what you need to know to keep the pets in your care calm, safe, and happy throughout the holiday season. And pet owners feeling relaxed and guilt-free!
1. Handling Christmas Decorations and Pet Safety
Festive decorations can be surprisingly dangerous for pets. Christmas trees, tinsel, baubles, and fairy lights are all potential hazards. Curious cats may climb trees, dogs may chew low-hanging decorations, and trailing wires can easily be pulled down or tripped over (a hazard for us humans too!).
As pet sitters, we need to stay alert, and ensure decorations are out of reach, where possible, and act quickly to stop pets from chewing or climbing, plus clearing up quickly if something breaks or goes missing.

2. Managing Extra Noise and Unexpected Activity
The festive season often brings extra disturbances, noise and activity levels; from delivery drivers with their engines running and blaring car radios, to neighbours celebrating, and visitors dropping in.
Some pets can be particularly sensitive to these extra and unfamiliar sounds, people or sudden changes in their environment. An experienced house sitter recognises these stress triggers early, and ensures that pets have quiet, safe spaces where they can retreat and feel secure away from it all.
3. Helping Pets Cope With Fireworks
For many pets, New Year fireworks are the most stressful part of the festive season. Dogs may shake or bark, cats may hide, and smaller animals can become extremely distressed.

As good house sitters, we prepare in advance by keeping pets safely indoors, closing windows and curtains, and using calming techniques such as background noise (radio, TV, etc), pheromone diffusers, or other calming aids, that may have been prescribed for the owner, for particularly sensitive pets. You have to be mindful of all kinds of noise and flashing lights when housesitting for pets at Christmas and New Year.
4. Avoiding Dangerous Festive Foods
Festive food and pets don’t mix! Foods such as chocolate, mince pies, grapes, raisins, onions, alcohol, and rich leftovers can all be harmful or even fatal. During a festive house sit, it’s essential to keep food securely stored and out of reach of little mischiefs.

It’s best to avoid the temptation to give extra treats, ensuring pets stick to their usual diet, no matter how convincing those pleading eyes may be!
5. Being Prepared for Vet Emergencies during the Holidays
Vet services often run reduced hours over Christmas and New Year, which can make any emergencies more difficult and stressful. Before the sit begins, house sitters should liaise with the pet owner for any specific instructions, know where the nearest emergency vet is, and understand what to do if urgent treatment is needed.
It’s also important to understand what actually constitutes an urgent situation, versus something that can wait. Advance prep really can make all the difference when time is critical.
6. Keeping Daily Routines as Normal as Possible
Pets thrive on routine, however both Christmas and the New Year can disrupt their normal schedules. Pets rely on consistency to feel happy and secure. Feeding times, walks, medication, and bedtime routines should remain as close to normal as possible. As house sitters, we play a crucial role in maintaining a sense of normality and stability during this festive period.

7. Supporting Pets Emotionally While Owners Are Away
As well as the pets’ parents being away, pets often sense that something else is different during the holidays, and may miss their owners more than usual. As house sitters, it’s our job to provide extra companionship, playtime and gentle reassurance to help pets feel safe and loved. During a Christmas house sit, the sitter often becomes the pet’s main source of comfort and emotional stability.
8. Adapting Pet Care to Winter Weather
Shorter and darker days, icy pavements, freezing temperatures, and muddy conditions all affect pet care during Winter.
Walks may need adjusting, paws will most certainly need cleaning or protection, and outdoor time may be shorter but more frequent. A thoughtful house sitter adapts pet care to suit these challenging winter conditions, whilst keeping pets comfortable and safe.

9. Reassuring Regular Communication with Pet Owners
Festive house sits work best when expectations between homeowners and their sitters are clear. Regular updates, photos, and messages reassure owners who may feel guilty about being away at Christmas. Clear, friendly communication builds trust and ensures any small issues are dealt with quickly.
Final Thoughts on Housesitting for Pets at Christmas
Housesitting for pets at Christmas and over the New Year period isn’t just about being there, walking and feeding. It’s about providing thoughtful, calm and proactive care during a potentially overwhelming and stressful time for pets.
With good preparation, empathy, and attention to detail, festive house sitting can be a calm and comforting experience for pets, and a wonderful experience for sitters and pet owners alike.
