Most housesits are located in walkable neighbourhoods with easy access to parks, riverside paths, historic streets and cultural landmarks. Whether you’re caring for pets who need regular walks or simply enjoying your free time between duties, London’s compact layout makes it effortless to discover new corners every day.

From leafy residential areas like Dulwich and Hampstead to iconic routes around Covent Garden, Westminster and the Thames, housesitters can enjoy a slower, more immersive experience of the city — one that tourists rarely get to see. Walking becomes part of the rhythm of your stay, helping you feel connected to the neighbourhood you’re temporarily calling home.

Housesitting in London: A Walking Guide from Covent Garden to the Thames

If you are pet sitting in the capital and want to discover the city on foot, one of my favourite walking routes begins in vibrant Covent Garden and gently winds its way down to the River Thames, passing some of the city’s most fascinating historic sights.

Looking up in Covent Garden

There are few better places to begin a London walk than Covent Garden. The area is always lively, packed with street performers, cafes, and boutiques. But the real magic happens when you look up.

Head to the rooftop terrace of the Royal Opera House for a unique, elevated perspective of the unmistakable London skyline—a brilliant mix of historic chimneys and modern glass. So, you don’t normally need to buy an opera or ballet ticket just to visit the building/terrace, but you may need to purchase something if you want to sit and use the bar facilities. Just in case you want to linger and absorb the wonderful atmosphere of the Garden!

Back at street level, the London Transport Museum sits right in the piazza. It offers a captivating look into how the capital developed alongside its iconic vintage buses and Tube trains over the last 200 years, making it the perfect indoor detour if the British weather suddenly turns.

Hidden Courtyards and Quiet Galleries

From Covent Garden, make your way toward Seven Dials, pausing at the Nespresso Store opposite the old ‘Apple Market’ for a complimentary tasting. Yes you can order a free coffee and sit on the soft comfy sofas, the coffee is naturally very good.

Seven Dials is where wandering without a strict plan pays off. Seven streets radiate from the famous central column, lined with independent shops and stunning architecture. Take a slight detour through the lighted archway on Long Acre to discover Neal’s Yard.

Neals’ Yard is a tiny, brightly coloured courtyard feels completely removed from the grand landmarks you will encounter later and is an ideal spot to snap a few photos. Made famous in the 20th Century when Pythons Michael Palin and Terry Gilliam bought offices at 11 Neal’s Yard, and an ‘alternative’ entrepreneur created a wholefood dairy, bakery, coffee shop and an apothecary known as ‘Neal’s Yard Remedies’ drew in a new type of visitor.

Continuing toward Trafalgar Square, the intimate streets open up into the monumental scale of central London. Take your time enjoying the fountains and Nelson’s Column before walking toward St James’s. A highly recommended cultural detour here is the Stern Pissarro Gallery. Established in 1964 and co-owned by the great-granddaughter of Camille Pissarro, this gallery boasts an unusually deep well of Impressionist and Contemporary family history.

Green Spaces and Riverside Views

Next, transition from busy streets to the serene greenery of St James’s Park. If you are housesitting in London with a dog, this is a fantastic segment of the walk, as dogs are welcome on the footpaths around the lake. The views from the Blue Bridge across the water to Buckingham Palace and Big Ben are spectacular.

Follow the park directly to Westminster, where the extraordinary scale of the Houses of Parliament awaits. From here, continue down to the Victoria Embankment along the River Thames. The river opens the city up entirely. Keep an eye out for Cleopatra’s Needle—an authentic ancient Egyptian obelisk flanked by atmospheric sphinxes, sitting unexpectedly beside iconic British landmarks.

Finally, gaze across the water at the London Eye, find a quiet spot by the river’s edge, and simply watch the boats go by.
