Housesitting in Zafferana Etnea: A Wild Autumn Adventure

Housesitting in Zafferana Etnea is a dream come true for any adventurous Europhile — especially one who adores Italy in all its flavours, rhythms, and glorious contradictions. Our housesitter arrived on the slopes of Mount Etna with a love of Italian food, culture, and Italian heritage already running through her veins, ready to embrace a town that shifts from quiet misty mornings to wild autumn celebrations without warning. What she found in Zafferana was a place that felt both deeply traditional and thrillingly alive — the perfect backdrop for a sitter who thrives on discovery, connection, and a touch of chaos.

Housesitting in Zafferana Etnea — Living Beside Etna’s Eruptions and Ottobrata’s Wild Autumn

Housesitting in Zafferana Etnea is unlike anywhere else in Europe. Last October, I spent ten unforgettable days caring for two cats in a home perched high on the slopes of Mount Etna, Europe’s most active volcano. The town of Zafferana Etnea is beautiful, sometimes foggy, often sleepy — and then suddenly wide awake, buzzing with life as if someone handed it 1,000 energy drinks. It’s timeless, charming, and absolutely alive.

The Ottobrata Zafferanese

Every autumn, Zafferana transforms during Ottobrata, four weekends when the town proudly presents its food, culture, and volcanic heritage to visitors from all over the world. People cross continents, endure layovers, and survive questionable airport coffee just to be here — and once you experience it, you understand why.

Ottobrata: Four Weekends of Controlled Chaos 🍄

The Ottobrata Zaffarenese is a unqiue festival held in Zafferana Etnea every October, with the town showing off everything it loves:

  • Porcini mushrooms freshly hunted on the first of October
  • Local honey from fiery, hardworking bees
  • Wines and olive oils grown in ancient volcanic soil
  • Zeppole di Riso, fried rice‑flour balls drenched in honey
  • Classic Sicilian marzipan made with pistachios grown right on Etna’s slopes

And that’s just the food.

The festival itself is a glorious madhouse: music from every direction, crowds flowing like a living river, artisans carving lava‑stone sculptures as if it’s the most normal thing in the world. It’s loud, joyful, chaotic — and absolutely worth experiencing.

My Balcony: The Best Seat in the House

My housesit was directly across from the main Ottobrata food area — a half‑covered parking lot transformed into a smoky, fragrant wonderland of grilled meats and vegetables. From the balcony, I watched smoke rise, crowds weave, and a hundred languages float upward. Kids shrieked on the giostre, adults laughed over wine, and life unfolded right below me.

Double‑glazing was my best friend.

Mount Etna: Her Show of Strength

The most extraordinary part of housesitting in Zafferana Etnea is living beside Etna herself. She is calm, powerful, unapologetic — and she demands respect.

Eruptions began quietly: a rumble, a vibration underfoot. The two cats I cared for would look at me knowingly, then leap into my lap like tiny furry volcanologists. They’d clearly done this before.

We’d move inside, close the balcony doors, and settle into the big chair — me, two cats, and my inner dragon, thrilled to finally witness a volcano behaving like a volcano.

The plume rose fast, glowing red and orange. Etna was performing.

The Morning After: Ash Everywhere

Every morning after an eruption, the town woke up and instantly knew which way the wind had blown. Ash on balconies, ash on cars, ash in places ash should not logically be.

Sweeping volcanic ash is not “just sweeping.” It’s fine, gritty, clingy, and determined to stay exactly where you don’t want it. If ash had a LinkedIn profile, its skills section would simply say: “Staying put.”

I swept that balcony more times than I care to admit, and Etna occasionally puffed a tiny cloud as if judging my technique.

Orchidea: My Favourite Discovery 🍕

My greatest joy was discovering Orchidea, the oldest family‑run pizzeria in town. Walking in felt like stepping into someone’s home — the kind of home where you’re handed food before you even sit down.

Gaetano, the pizzaiolo, works the wood‑fired oven with decades of confidence. His wife Giovanna brings warmth to the front, and their sons glide through the tables with the ease of people raised in the rhythm of hospitality.

The pizza? I don’t know if it’s the dough, the oven, the volcanic air, or a secret family technique — but I’m convinced it’s love. You can taste it in every bite.

If you’re ever in Zafferana Etnea, run — don’t walk — to Orchidea.
