What Would you do if a Housesit is Cancelled?
If you are new to housesitting you may find that from time to time, even the most carefully planned housesitting assignments fall through. Travel disruption, illness, or changing plans can all lead to last-minute cancellations on both sides.
If you’re a full-time housesitter, this can impact not only your schedule—but also your finances and travel plans.
So, what should you do next?
Some housesitters, you may be one of them, housesit full time as a lifestyle. So cancellations can cause a huge impact, to say nothing of the additional cost. So what do you do?
That Dreaded “Cancellation” Message
Sometimes I don’t like turning the notification bell back on on my phone first thing in the morning. It’s so peaceful while I’m maybe chilling myself to sleep by doing crossword puzzles or basically throughout the night because there’s no reason why I’d need to receive notifications at 2 or 3 or 4 in the morning. I’ve got one family member left and he’s six hours behind me and knows that I’ll see anything first thing in the morning – and he knows it’s not like I can jump up and fly over there for any reason.
So.
I don’t normally do this, as I usually wait until I’ve showered and sitting down with a cup of coffee, but I went ahead and got up, went downstairs to feed my charges, then got back into bed for the next alarm…and decided to click WhatsApp.
*damn*
Why did I do that?!

No Easy Way to Say ‘This Housesit is Cancelled’
It’s the message no sitter wants to wake up to:
“Hi Maria. I hate to be writing this message, especially last minute, but…” and on it went for about 10 lines. It wasn’t her fault, truly—she didn’t close the airport with all flights in and out, even just transitory couple-hour layover ones, cancelled with no set or known reopening date, leaving everyone in a complete mess of uncertainty.
But when you do this full-time and have no “home base” and then a housesit is cancelled it can throw you for an absolute loop. Though gaps are expected and usually figured into your calendar both in timing and financially (and even calculated and purposefully put in for reasons such as trave, or a break), the unexpected ones aren’t. And her message was clear – this housesit is cancelled! So much for going back to bed for 30 or 45 minutes. Get up, get showered, get some coffee, and get your brain ready to figure this out. No need to panic just yet.
Tips For Handling Those Last-Minute Housesit Cancellations
1. Stay Calm and Assess the Situation
First and foremost: Relax. Don’t panic! Get done whatever you need to do first thing in your “sitter morning” urgent pet care etc, and then settle down with your tools.
Take a moment to understand:
- How many days you need to fill
- How soon the gap begins
- Whether you have enough of a financial buffer to manage this first hurdle.
Short gaps (a few days to a week) are usually easier to manage. Longer gaps require a more strategic approach. Now get in gear:
Check your membership level for trip cancellation support to see if you qualify. HouseSit Match have one if you have Choice or Premium Membership. So worth the investment if the cancellation is not your fault.
Highlight exactly what days you need. If your cancellation was only a few days or maybe a week or so, this shouldn’t be any issue nor need to slow that ol’ heartrate down. However, if – as in my case – it was one full month, then still you can relax because you need to remind yourself that you have time (hopefully this was not last-minute as in one or two days, but at least a week, which gives you some wiggle room for breathing normally!).
2. Check Your Housesitting Platform Benefits
Some platforms—like HouseSit Match—offer trip cancellation support depending on your membership level.
Check your membership level to see if you qualify for support. HouseSit Match have one if you have Choice or Premium Membership. So worth the investment to protect you if the cancellation is not your fault.
If you’re using a premium housesitting service, check:
- Trip cancellation coverage – You might qualify for up to 5 nights emergency accommodation support
- Emergency accommodation options – HousesitMatch.com has a partnership with NomadStays.com
- Member support services – Reach out to admin via Contact us or Livechat.
This can make a huge difference in stressful situations, especially if your housesit is cancelled.
3. Get Organised and Plan Your Gap
List your cancelled dates clearly and map out your options.
Helpful tools include:
- A digital calendar or planner – I use an Google Sheet I can share with clients
- A simple notebook (great for visual thinkers) many of us think best with pen and paper
- Saved searches on housesitting websites – Keep them as book marks for easy access.
Having a clear overview helps you stay focused and proactive. Of course, HouseSit Match should always be your first tab opened! Click the chat button and let Lamia know what’s happening. She can probably help you with either focus or ideas and certainly keep you out of panic mode! Have your calendar directly in front of you with the cancelled dates already deleted so that you can visually see what you’re doing.
4. Use Multiple Housesitting Platforms
Don’t rely on just one website.
Join another Housesitting platform – they may have dates pop up that fill your gaps. Never underestimate the power of using multiple platforms. Even if they are smaller than the big one, there will be advantages and new homeowners to work with. Check their Trustpilot rating and make your choice; expand your reach as a house and petsitter.
Expand your search across:
- Multiple housesitting platforms – maintain at least two subscriptions to double your chances
- Multiple geographies if you can, there may be long housesits worth the train or air fare
- Facebook or private sitter groups
- Trusted networks of homeowners and their friends.
Using more than one platform increases your chances of finding last-minute housesits quickly.
On a side note…if you’re a full-timer and have no “home”, check to know in your head what you can handle financially should you not be able to fill that entire gap when the housesit is cancelled. You then need to be thinking of whether you’re still young enough at heart to handle hostels, or volunteering for a free bed. 😊

5. Be Flexible with Short-Term Housesits
If you usually prefer long-term sits, when that housesit is cancelled, you’ll realise that now is the time to compromise.
Consider:
- Weekend housesits
- Short pet sitting assignments
- Nearby locations to reduce travel costs.
Flexibility is key to filling unexpected gaps efficiently.
6. Reach Out to Your Network
One of the biggest benefits of house and pet sitting is the relationships you build with people you help, the homeowners, their neighbours when they ask you to walk their dog or feed their cat if they are away for a short time and so one. With that in mind, when that housesit is cancelled-
Contact:
- Previous homeowners
- Repeat clients
- Fellow housesitters.
You might find someone who suddenly needs help—who knows you and trusts you already.
7. Consider Alternative Accommodation Options
If you can’t fill every day with housesits, think creatively:
- Budget hostels, or partner networks like NomadStays.com
- House sitting swaps with people you’ve already worked with
- Volunteering for free accommodation with a platform like Workaway.com
- Staying with friends or contacts, time to open that little black book of yours.
Having a backup plan reduces stress when that housesit is cancelled, and keeps your overall travel plans intact.
Remember—that’s one of the wonderful and amazing things about house/pet-sitting: the relationships we make along the way, with both owners and fellow sitters. You never know which one of those repeats might say… “Ooh we were wanting to take a quick getaway. Lucky for us that your housesit is cancelled, we could do with your help!”

See? All’s Well That Ends Well
For me, I was able to get all those days rebooked, in relative close physical proximity to each other, with the exception of four days. (But also with some help from someone in my network whom I’ve helped before, they in turn helping me out with a free room for three days! – It’s good to collaborate.)
I still have a few applications in to cover those last four days, but it’s far enough away to not really worry too much about it right at the moment because it’s the last four days of the initial sit.
Final Thoughts: When a Housesit Is Cancelled, Stay Flexible
Cancellations are part of the housesitting lifestyle—especially during times of global travel disruption.
The key is to:
- Stay calm
- Stay organised
- Stay flexible
With the right mindset and tools, you can turn a stressful situation into an opportunity.
Remember – Every challenge in housesitting is also a chance to strengthen your network, gain experience, and grow your confidence as a sitter, even when a much longed for housesit is cancelled. You’ll get through it.
These are things we know, might happen to us as full time housesitters. We know they are always a distinct possibility, especially when travel around the world is in a turmoil; with airport closures, airlines cancelling flights, even cruises making itinerary changes. All of this leads to home/pet-owner having to make last-minute cancellations or changes, leaving a sitter to then take a deep breath, relax…and focus.
