My Unforgettable Naples Housesitting Adventure

When housesitters tell you of their ‘unforgettable housesitting adventures’ you listen and it can stimulate itchy feet. In this article Tiera St Claire tells us about her fantastic time dogsitting in Naples for an adorable hound called Gatsby. She had time enough after caring for him to discover this unique destination on foot. Read on to learn more about her Italian adventure.

Big Dogs, Big Hearts: My Unforgettable Housesitting Adventure

There are cities that impress visitors with polished beauty, and then there is Naples—loud, layered, chaotic, and unforgettable. Sitting along the Bay of Naples beneath the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, this southern Italian city offers something more powerful than postcard perfection: raw authenticity.

Naples: Italy’s Most Vibrant Coastal City

Naples is a place where scooters race through narrow alleys, laundry hangs between centuries-old buildings, and the aroma of fresh pizza drifts from tiny, family-run kitchens. Every corner feels alive. For housesitters willing to embrace its unique energy, Naples becomes one of Italy’s most rewarding destinations. It was certainly provided an unforgettable housesitting adventure for me.

Finding Gatsby Through My Housesitting Adventure

I went to Naples for a pet sit and had a great big housesitting adventure. I was matched with an incredible rescue dog called Gatsby. He was a super-large pit bull who had previously suffered a stroke, which meant his tongue continually lolled out of his mouth.

Despite his intimidating size, he was incredibly sweet and affectionate. In the middle of a scorching, non-air-conditioned Italian summer, he would come and lay his entire 75-pound (34 kg) body right on top of me while I lay on the sofa with the fan blowing. I never had the heart to push him away!

Gatsby did come with his challenges; he was very reactive during our twice-daily walks through the chaotic streets of Napoli. I had to stay highly alert, as he would unexpectedly lunge at bikes, cats, or sudden sounds.

But the payoff was entirely worth it. Because Gatsby could safely be left alone for a few hours during the day, I was able to walk all over this amazing city, capturing some of the best photos I’ve ever taken.

More on My Housesitting Adventure: A City Built on History

Founded by the Greeks more than 2,500 years ago, Naples has been shaped by Romans, Normans, Spanish rulers, and Bourbon kings. The city’s historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the largest old towns in Europe.

Walking through Naples feels like moving through layers of history. Ancient churches stand beside graffiti-covered walls, while underground tunnels reveal Greek and Roman ruins beneath busy modern streets. Baroque palaces overlook crowded piazzas where locals gather late into the night.

One of the city’s highlights is Spaccanapoli, the narrow street that literally cuts through the old centre. Here, you can discover artisan workshops, hidden courtyards, traditional cafés, and lively street markets right on your doorstep.

Escaping the Chaos: Views of the Bay and Vomero

While the energy of the city center is infectious, a housesitting adventure allowed me the luxury of time to find quieter, local pockets. During my sit, I would often walk up the hill from where I stayed to stroll along a street with fabulous coastal views, stepping just a little bit out of the beautiful madness that is Naples.

A little farther up the hill is the neighborhood of Vomero, an oasis of calm and beauty. This elegant hilltop district features leafy avenues, Liberty-style villas, and bustling shopping streets like Via Alessandro Scarlatti. It is also home to Castel Sant’Elmo and the Certosa di San Martino, which offer some of the absolute best panoramic views in the city.

Day Trips from My Naples Housesitting Base

One of the greatest perks of a long-term housesitting adventure was using my temporary home as a launchpad for incredible day trips. Because Gatsby could be left safely for a few hours, I was able to explore these three spectacular nearby destinations:

1. Pompeii

A short train journey from the city leads to Pompeii, the ancient Roman city preserved beneath volcanic ash after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Exploring its streets gives visitors a remarkable glimpse into everyday Roman life.

⚠️ Top Tip for Housesitters: Be mindful of your belongings! The train to Pompeii can get very crowded, and I actually caught a pickpocket rummaging through my handbag. Keep your bags zipped and close to your chest.

2. Sorrento

A little farther along the coast is Sorrento, a lovely coastal town with an air of serenity that provides a wonderful contrast to Napoli. Sorrento’s compact size makes it easy to explore on foot. You can walk along Via San Cesareo to discover hidden courtyards, or stop by the peaceful Cloister of San Francesco, a beautiful medieval structure known for its elegant arches.

Just nearby, the Villa Comunale terrace offers sweeping views of Mount Vesuvius and the sparkling bay—the perfect place for photos.

3. Pozzuoli

Just west of Naples lies Pozzuoli, a historic coastal town rich in ancient ruins, volcanic landscapes, and authentic local culture. Often overlooked by travellers heading straight to the Amalfi Coast, Pozzuoli offers a quieter, more atmospheric experience.

A major highlight here is the Flavian Amphitheatre, one of the largest Roman amphitheatres in Italy. Walking through its underground corridors offers a fascinating glimpse into ancient history, but without the dense tourist crowds.

Embracing the Spirit of Naples

What truly defines Naples is not just its monuments, but its vibrant personality. The city is passionate, emotional, and deeply human. Locals speak loudly, laugh freely, and maintain strong traditions rooted in family and community. Naples may not feel as orderly as Florence or as glamorous as Milan, but that is exactly its appeal. It is a city that embraces imperfection and lives fully in the moment.

For animal lovers seeking culture, history, world-class food, and raw energy, a housesitting adventure here is unmatched. Whether you are housesitting in Naples itself or using it as a base to explore southern Italy, this amazing city offers a travel experience that stays with you long after the journey ends.
